Column radiators and designer radiators are two of the most popular choices for anyone updating their heating. Both can look fantastic, but they suit different homes and different rooms. Here's how they compare.
Column radiators
Column radiators are made up of vertical tubes, or columns, joined together. They're inspired by the cast iron radiators found in Victorian and Edwardian homes, but modern steel versions are lighter, quicker to heat up and easier to install.
- Look: timeless and traditional, but they also work well in modern and industrial interiors, especially in raw metal lacquer, anthracite or black.
- Heat output: you can usually choose 2, 3 or 4 columns. More columns means a deeper radiator with a bigger heating surface, so more heat from the same wall space.
- Best for: period properties, living rooms, hallways and under windows.
Designer radiators
"Designer radiator" covers a wide range of contemporary styles, including flat panel, flat tube, oval tube and aluminium radiators. They're chosen as much for their looks as their warmth.
- Look: clean, minimal and modern, often available in a wider range of colours and finishes.
- Space: tall vertical designer radiators are ideal for narrow walls or rooms where there's no space under the window.
- Aluminium options: aluminium radiators heat up quickly and work efficiently with lower water temperatures.
- Best for: contemporary homes, kitchens, open-plan spaces and feature walls.
Quick comparison
- Traditional or period home? Column radiators are a natural fit.
- Modern or minimalist interior? A flat panel or tube designer radiator will suit best.
- Short of wall space? Look at vertical radiators in either style.
- Need lots of heat? A 3 or 4 column radiator, or a double panel designer radiator, gives more output for its size.
Whichever you choose, check the output
Style is only half the decision. Always check the heat output (BTU or watts) against what your room needs. Our guide on choosing the right radiator size explains how.
